A USWA was established May 22, 1942 by a convention of representatives from either a old Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers & the Steel Workers Organizing Committee, after most sixer years of violent and dissentious struggles to produce the newly union of steelmaker. A cause to produce a USWA involved such violent incidents when a notorious Memorial Day, 1937, when Chicago policemen fired on workers outside of Republic Steel and killed 10 men. Lee Pressman of the underground Ware group, a class action of CPUSA members involved within espionage activities for the Soviet Union, was the Steel Workers Organizing Committees' General Councel.

A 46,000 members of a Aluminum Workers of United states of america voted to merge sustaining a budding steelmaker uniin that was the USWA on June 30, 1944.
